What is a Notary Public?

A Notary Public is an officer constituted by law. Each Notary Public is appointed by the Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Ireland and assigned to a specific county.

A Notary Public serves in non contentious matters usually concerned with foreign or international business. The function is mainly to attest the identity and authenticity of signatories and documents. The acts of Notaries Public have worldwide recognition.

A Notary Public is empowered by law, and custom and the usage of notaries through the ages to: Administer oaths; Attest signatures; Authenticate documents; Give notarial acts; Taking affidavits other than for the Courts in Ireland; Taking affirmations and declarations generally; Receiving and making protests under Mercantile Law and the issue of notarial certificates in respect of documents and persons; Drawing up Powers of Attorney and other legal documents customarily prepared by a Notary Public.
